Accommodation in Mount Manganui
The town of Mount Maunganui (large hill) is situated on a headland at the foot of Mount Maunganui, across from Tauranga and the ‘Bay of Plenty’. This is a popular seaside town with beautiful beaches and only a short drive from Auckland.
Mount Maunganui in the past was an island, and it is still clearly see that it was once a volcano. The sandbar between the mainland and the island ‘grew’ more and more and eventually formed the headland where now the site Mount Maunganui is. In the summer months the town is ‘populated’ by many beach goers, mainly New Zealanders, who are attracted by the beautiful beaches, the surf, laid back culture and great weather.
For active visitors a climb to the 232 meter summit is a good alternative for those who have no want to spend the day sunbathing or swimming. Once at the top you are rewarded with a panoramic view of the area. Here you can also see the outline of a fortified Maori village that was here in the past.
At the foot of the mountain are saltwater pools filled with warm water bubbling from a source that is 40 meters deep. The hot water is also pumped into thermal baths where it is wonderful to relax, especially after a climb to the summit and back.
Make sure to stop in the seaside city of Tauranga. The waterfront strand area has a number of excellent cafes, bars, restaurants and shops.
