Auckland City is right on the harbor and has a number of fantastic waterfront restaurants, bars and nightlife. It is also a great place for shopping with a number of malls and shops along the main street Queen Street as well as its surrounding streets. The best spot for boutique and designer shops is High Street or the nearby suburbs of Parnell and Ponsonby.
There are also museums, art galleries and parks, popular ones being Albert Park (located right next to The University of Auckland), Victoria Park (closest to the waterfront area and Victoria Park Market, a great spot for dining and souvenir shopping) and the Auckland Domain (which is where the Auckland Museum is located). The best view of the city is from the top of the volcanic mountain Mount Eden.
Auckland city is fairly spread out and covers the area of around 60 square kilometers, most of which are ‘suburbs’ or residential areas. But there are few that stand out. Parnell is the best known and is only 2km from the city center. Here Auckland was founded by English settlers. You will see a lot of Victorian houses and shops that have been preserved. There are a number of great cafes and designer shops.
A short bus ride to the south west lies the fashionable suburb of Ponsonby with the some of the finest Victorian homes of Auckland. Ponsonby has many top restaurants, cafes and pubs. It’s also well known for its designer and boutique shops. If you want to go shopping or to the movies the suburb of Newmarket is an ideal spot. There are also a great number of bars, cafes and restaurants here too.
