The romance of the tropics… surely
there can be no more perfect place to make a commitment to a future with
your partner. Whether you are marrying for the first or subsequent time
(or re-affirming your vows) it is a simple process. You need to notify the
relevant authorities about a month before. We can arrange this for you (or
your resort can). You need to fill out a notice of intention to marry and
provide copies of birth certificates, divorce papers if applicable, and
passport details.
The Lord Mayor of Port Vila conducts the civil ceremony
and this is an example of what you would get in a wedding package (based
on Le Lagon Parkroyal):
- upgrade to a Lagoon view bungalow for the
bridal couple
- a fanfare of natives blowing cone shells on
arrival
- bridal party to arrive in traditional wedding
canoes
- a beach or island setting
- authentic Melanesian string band to serenade
the bridal party
- the celebrant (and witness if required)
- complimentary fruit cocktail
- traditional shell leis for all guests
attending
- floral arch for the ceremony
- marriage certificate
The cost for this package: VT48,500 As I mentioned, my wife
and I re-affirmed our vows after 20 years and it was a wonderful
experience. The tradition is that the bride comes from one village or
island, the groom from another. The bride is transported by boat, escorted
by warriors. They are met by the groom's warriors who attack the boat to
take the bride hostage. One of the warriors then asks the groom whether he
wants the woman as his wife, or does he want her killed… the groom then
raises a 'peace' palm, and the bride is escorted to her partner… one
thing I remember vividly is the voice of my son James (7) from behind
me… "Oh come on Dad, hurry up and pick up the palm!".
