Tours and Attractions:

Tours are organised to discover the Yasur volcano and the local culture. A blue hole and some excellent reef-walking spots are close-by.

• Yasur Volcano : Afternoon and evening tour by local truck. The tour will take you across the island to first visit Port Resolution and its famous resident dugong and will come and interact with swimmers (when not busy elsewhere). The tour will then take you to the crater of the Yasur volcano, easily accessible by foot (10 minute walk). This is an exhilarating and unforgettable experience: lava thrown hundreds of meters in the air, glowing in the falling night, the rumbling of the explosions and the ground vibrations. This tour alone is worth your airfare from home. During times of high activity, the volcano is monitored closely.
• Custom village: The villagers have chosen to reject the modernway of life, to keep their customs and to live as they did centuries ago in nambas and grass skirts, hunting, gathering nuts and tending their gardens.
• You will be offered a sample of traditional custom dancing and some handicrafts.
• White Grass Plains, Coffee plantation: This short tour takes you across the White Grass Plain, with occasional glimpses of wild horses and then on to the Tanna Coffee estate.
• John Frum cargo cult: Every Friday the village of Ipeukel on Sulphur Bay celebrates the expected coming of John Frum who is supposed to bring a ship full of goods. Men exercise with wooden rifles, women in grass skirts and men in lava lava will dance all night to the music of string bands.
