Hotel on Tanna (Southeast)

Port Resolution Guesthouse

Port Resolution is situated on the east of Tanna only a 2 hours drive from the airport. It is a simple village-like resort set in a lush tropical garden overlooking the Bay and offering beautiful views of the Yasur volcano.

Accommodation: There are 8 locally built round bungalows with either double or single beds lining the crest of a dramatic cliff. Lighted by kerosene lanterns and adorned with tropical flowers, the breathtaking Bay views and rumbles and glow of Yasur makes these bungalows truly spectacular. The staff here are all members of the nearby community and therefore change every 3 months. While they may not always be professionally experienced, they are genuinely warm and hospitable.

Bar and Restaurant: In our restaurant you will be treated to fresh food from our village gardens. Our menu is not fancy, but is nevertheless wholesome and delicious. Seafood is often available. Our bar is limited but you are welcome to bring your own favourite beverages.

Tours and attractions:
  • Yasur Volcano: Evening tour by local truck. The tour will take you to the crater of the Yasur volcano. The top of the crater is easily accessible by foot (10 minutes walk) and the breathtaking experience of lava thrown hundreds of meters in the air, glowing in the falling night, the rumbling of the explosions and the vibrations of the ground will be remembered all your life. This tour alone is worth your airfare from home. During times of high activity, the volcano is monitored closely.
  • Custom Village: The people of this village have chosen to strictly adhere to their traditional custom, living nearly exactly as they have for centuries. While most Tannese put on nambas and grass skirts only for ceremonies, the people of Yaohnanen always wear traditional dress. A visit to this village will enable you to watch traditional dancing and admire (or purchase) handicrafts, as well as the humbling experience of witnessing an ancient way of life.
  • Dugong of Port Resolution: This boisterous dugong is a sea cow resident in the Bay and will (when not busy elsewhere) come and interact with swimmers. Reserved for strong swimmers.
  • John Frum cargo cult: Every friday evening the village of Ipeukel on Sulphur Bay celebrates the expected coming of John Frum who will arrive with a ship full of goods. String bands play all night and women in grass skirts and men in lava lava dance until dawn.
  • Shark Bay: This short tour (one hour) will take you by truck to a neighbouring bay which is a breeding grounds for reef sharks. Hundreds of them can sometimes be seen, swimming along the shore. Swimming is not recommended.
  • Steam and Bat Caves: This short tour (one hour) will take you by truck across the bay to a cave with fumaroles coming from the ground and which is home to hundreds of local bats .
  • Port Resolution Canoe Trip: Explore with a local guide and fisherman the Port Resolution harbour (one hour).
