Hideaway Island Resort

Hideaway Island Resort and Marine Sanctuary is a tiny coral atoll that's about as close as you'll get to a Robinson Crusoe island escape in the South Pacific. All power is generator created, water is from the top of the pristine Cascade waterfalls and outside of the office there are no phones, faxes, computers or televisions.

Surrounded by clear turquoise water, coral reefs and thousands of fish, this Melanesian style resort is the custodian of one of Vanuatu's only marine sanctuaries, with coral reefs ideal for snorkeling or scuba diving right from the shore. The shallow reefs starting at the shoreline are home to thousands of 'tame' fish who are more than happy to show you around, while our qualified PADI Instructor and experienced dive guides will do their best to ensure you see the best of every site, whether you're a first time diver, on a course, or just out to enjoy yourself.

There is also plenty for the non-diver to do. A day on the island can be as busy or as quiet as you want to make it. As well as snorkeling and scuba diving, you can try sailing, waterskiing and beach volleyball, or use us as a base for a myriad of other tours and activities such as game or reef fishing, visiting the Cascading Waterfalls or having a round of golf.

Or if you prefer a more relaxing style of holidays, you can always just sit back, relax and enjoy the fare of our world class chef as you enjoy the view of beautiful Mele Bay,

Accommodation is all built in the Melanesian style with something to suit most tastes - from the deluxe, ocean view bungalow to basic beach cottages.

A Marine Awareness and Cultural Exchange Program (M.A.C.E.), designed to enhance knowledge of life on a tropical reef and foreign cultures has been developed to complement school curriculum. When running, this program also offers guests the opportunity to develop their understanding of the marine environment.

All this, and you're still less than 5 minutes ferry ride from Vanuatu's main island of Efaté and 12 minutes by road into the heart of the capital city, Port Vila. Should you feel the need to venture out and sample the local night life, rest assured our trusty ferry drivers are here around the clock to bring you back across the water.

Deluxe Ocean View Bungalows

Although more are planned in the near future, there are currently only 2 free standing deluxe bungalows and 2 of a similar standard that share a wall with another building on Hideaway.
All have spectacular water views and are placed to either catch the sunrise or the sunset. Most have double hammocks where you can relax. Outer walls are decorated with coral, while inside local artefacts adorn the walls. With tiled floors and separate bedroom/living areas furnished with a table and lounge these are the most comfortable of the Hideaway bungalows. Usually set up for a couple to enjoy, there is room for another double bed or some bunks if you need them.

As with the Standard Ocean View Bungalows, all have Hideaway's unique large clamshell sinks in the bathroom. None of these shells have been taken directly from the sea, but have instead been recovered following traditional Melanesian ceremonies. They are now beautiful, as well as functional, hand basins.

Standard Ocean View Bungalows

The 6 Standard Ocean View Bungalows are similar to but smaller than their deluxe counterparts. All are located on the south-eastern side of the island to catch the prevailing breezes and have a private garden with a hammock overlooking the water.

They also feature the clamshell sinks described above. Many also have bathrooms where you can enjoy a shower and the view at the same time. In these bungalows there is a single living bedroom area with a lounge setting. Bunks or another bed can be included if required.

Beach Lodges (basic)

The six twin share beach lodge units are located on the beach in a 'house' with a wide verandah ideal for lounging on and taking in the dramatic views over Mele Bay. Each room has a bed or beds, a wardrobe and hand basin. Other facilities are shared

Diving and Snorkeling

Hideaway Island is fast becoming known as a paradise for divers. Where else in the world can you roll out of bed and be SCUBA diving in less than 15 minutes. Here on Hideaway we have more than 15 dive sites within 10 minutes of the shore.

If you have never tried diving before you have the ideal opportunity to experience this sport through our PADI scuba Experience programm in our pool like Marine sanctuary.

The sites are all teeming with life ranging from sponges and hard corals, to anemones, gorgonian fans, and a host of fish. The sites themselves offer a range of styles - from right off the shore for great snorkeling or night diving, to steep walls dropping off to 97 meters, and caves formed by lava flows. After more than 12 years living in a marine sanctuary, the fine array of finned creatures that inhabit the sites have no fear of either divers or snorkelers.

The nearby wrecks of Port Vila Harbour are also easily accessible on the dive-equipped trimaran, 'Rage'.

You could also sail the protected waters of Havana Harbour on a full day cruise aboard 'Golden wing', and have two dives in the clear waters around Hat Island and Paul's Rock.

For the non-diver, many of the dive sites also make for excellent snorkeling, so feel free to join a dive group or the snorkel tour that leaves the island just after noon each day.

A full PADI Resort Association Member, Hideaway Island offers full rental and training services, with our live-in instructors qualified to teach you from your first dive, through a range of specialties and to the Assistant Instructor course.

Our aluminium Dive Boat will carry up to 14 divers at a time.
