| Great
for sight seeing, Calama is close to El Tatio Geysers, the geoliths of the
Atacama Desert, and just lots of fun stuff to explore. Calama is the only town in the middle of the
desert, and it is located on the banks of the river Loa. |
 |
|
| It is an
obligatory stopping place for visiting Chuquicamata, the largest open cut
copper mine in the world, and is the starting point for visiting the main
archaeological zone in the north, San Pedro de Atacama, the forts of
Quitor and lasana, the Tatio geysers, the Valley of the Moon and the
Atacama Salt Falts, an ancient sea bed which is now an impressive lithium
deposit.
Calama is so dry the locals attach their
postage stamps with staples rather than lick them!
Around Calama |
| Toconao, built using volcanic stone, Chiu Chiu, which has a
church with two towers and valuable religious images, and Caspana, a
veritable garden on the slope of a mountain, stand out among the area's
settlements. Antofagasta is a town where business, industrial and
intellectual activities abound and from where copper is shipped. It stands
out for its imposing cliffs and for "La Portada", a circular
arch which has been carved in the rock by the sea. |
