Ubajara
UBAJARA is a small, friendly town nestling in beautiful hills. There are a couple of simple but perfectly adequate hotels near the single church and quiet square, together with one or two bars and restaurants

It’s a pleasant place to stay, but probably the best option is to head a couple of kilometres out of town, along the road leading away from Tianguá, to the comfortable Pousada da Neblina, Estrada do Teleférico (tel 085/634-1270; $10–20).

Standing in splendid isolation at the foot of a hill covered with palm forest, it has a restaurant and swimming pool, and is remarkable value; you can also camp here. Another option is Sítio Santana, known as “Sítio do Alemão” by the locals, which provides small chalets on a coffee plantation ($10–20). The view from the chalets is spectacular and it’s only a short taxi ride away, or the owner will pick you up from town; just ask anyone in town to put you in touch with him.
