| The Archipelago of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) is made up of two big islands: Soledad to the east and Gran Malvina to the West. They are separated by the San Carlos Strait and hundreds of smaller islands. Its waters are rich in fish, crustaceans and molluscs. Its coasts possess numerous penguin colonies and a wide variety of marine fauna. The name of the islands originated in the French marines of Saint-Malo, who were the first to settle here at the beginning of 1700. They are under British rule since 1833. | |

A triangular sector with vertex in the South Pole, only 500 km from Tierra del Fuego, is occupied by the Argentine Antarctica. The triangle includes the Antartic Peninsula and numerous islands and archipelagos that surround it. The first to explore this area were the seal hunters, which caused the almost total extinction of this species. The remains of some tropical trees and an island with volcanic activity have been found. It is one of the most beautiful places of the world, where an immense white desert melts with the blue sky, the amber lights and the red dawn. The climate is relatively mild, with an average temperature of -5° C, while the average temperature on the South Pole is about -50° C. Numerous nations, apart from Argentina, have scientific bases in this region. The beauty of this landscape is one of the main attractions for the cruises of this area, though the direct contact with nature represents a more important factor for some travelers. Its natural value and its fauna make Antarctica one of the most attractive places in the world. Crossing the Drake Passage are the Shetland del Sur Islands, very close to the Antarctic Peninsula and with an easier access due not only to its proximity to the continent but also to its relatively easy access to the ice zones on firm land, which gives scientists the opportunity to investigate an area rich in plants and animals. Physics and observers of the geomagnetic phenomenon carry out valuable studies in this area. In the Georgia, Sandwich and Orcadas del Sur Islands, a great amount of colorful King Penguins welcome the visitors. Mountainous lands and numerous glaciers cover the islands. The virgin nature with its abundant life remains unexplored in the remote areas of the white continent. |
