Hotel on Upolu (Southshore)

Coconuts Beach Resort

Coconuts Beach Club and Resort is the physical manifestation of a dream. In 1980, owners Jennifer and Barry Rose decided to leave their Hollywood 'paradise in the fast lane' and seek out another, simpler paradise. Fifteen years and a fascinating story later, Coconuts Beach Club and Resort lies nestled in the ancient Samoan village of Maninoa on a glorious beach just 30 minutes scenic drive from Apia.

Coconuts offers three choices in deluxe bungalows which include complimentary mini-bar and complimentary use of a 4WD Suzuki Jeep for the duration of the stay: the only Over-the-Water bungalows in Samoa (a new addition for 1997), individual Deluxe Beach Fales and a Deluxe Beach Villa.

There are also hotel rooms: Tree House (Superior) Rooms, and Courtyard (Standard) Rooms, all accented by beautifully carved local timber and featuring air-conditioning, ceiling fans, coffee and tea making facilities, and a 'safe' for valuables.

The Over-the-Water Fales are one-bedroom and feature thatched roofs, island decor, a glass-bottom floor to view the sea life and a deck with steps leading down into the sea.

They have a king-size bed, a sitting area with queen-size convertible sofabed and private facilities with shower.

Beach Fales have a split-level design with sitting room, mini bar and either one or two separate bedrooms. The large, 'fern grotto' bathroom opens onto a private garden and has lava rock walls with a mini waterfall cascading into a sunken bathing pool.

The Beach Villa has two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, separate sitting room with queen size convertible sofabed, full kitchen, and a covered private terrace facing the sea.

Tree House Rooms offer garden or ocean views and every room has a mini refrigerator and a seven-metre wall of sliding glass doors opening onto a huge balcony with chaise lounge. Bathrooms feature an oversize two-person 'bathtub' in a greenhouse setting.

Clustered around a garden with a Polynesian village atmosphere, the spacious Courtyard Rooms have queen size beds, plus one or two single beds, and private bathroom.

Discover the simple pleasures of paradise...

The pristine, white sand fringed lagoon is enclosed by a protective reef and is complemented by a brand new 'gecko-shaped' swimming pool with swim-up bar. The resort's Watersports Centre offers equipment and/or instruction for scuba diving, paddle boats, kayaks, sail boards, sail boats and row boats.

For more adventurous activities, there are jungle river cruises, sport fishing, and dive trips. Staff members will guide guests through the village, and the resort also has rental cars (with the option of a driver/guide) and motor scooters for those who wish to explore the island further.

Indulge in one of Mika's magical cocktails around 6.00pm on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings during the sunset ceremony when a young man from the village blows the traditional conch shell and torches are lit to welcome the night.

Then sample succulent local seafood, and French and Italian specialties, complemented by fine European and Californian wines at Sieni's Three-Stool-Bar and Restaurant right on the beach overlooking the lagoon.

On weekend afternoons, the Coconuts Beach Club Band plays soothing island music on the Palm Terrace. Visit the Gift Shop which also has an exchange library, or if you prefer an intimate escape, Mika will arrange a lobster and champagne picnic.

Saturday is Fiafia night at Coconuts, with the entertainers coming from surrounding villages and including the spectacular fire-knife dancers (some as young as five) and it all happens on the beach! Coconuts truly is the perfect Polynesian Retreat.
