Immigration
Easter Island belongs to Chile. Upon entering Chile a tourist stay of max. 3 months is typically granted. You require a valid passport, which is valid for at least three months on arrival, a valid return or onward ticket and sufficient funds to finance your stay. You can demonstrate this with cash, travelers checks or a credit card. There are no special requirements with respect to mandatory vaccinations for tourists. Upon arrival, an “Arrival Card” “be filled with personal data; This is already being distributed on board the aircraft.

On arrival in Chile, the traveler is asked for an explanation on any brought food, plants and products of animal origin. To protect the pristine nature and agriculture Tonga has strict rules regarding the importation of food, animals and plants.

Entertainment & Night Life
Only in Hanga Roa in the weekend you will find nightlife of any significance (restaurants, bars and discos). Most tourists, however, continue in the evening in their hotel to dine and socialize in the bar. Some hotels offer on certain nights of the week, a traditional dance show.

Food & Drink
Most hotels on Easter Island have one restaurant. In addition, you will also find several fast food restaurants in Hanga Roa, local “takeaways” and small restaurants. The ingredients used are usually imported. The clothing is usually informal “Casual”.

Although Easter Island is surrounded by ocean, there is little fishing and you will find not necessarily a lot of seafood on the menu. However, many tropical fruit is used. In traditional cuisine is sweet potato and cassava (both the root and the leaves) is typically used.

Internet
If you have your laptop or smartphone along on your trip, you can use it in certain places using a wifi connection.

If you want to access the internet on the go, that you need to purchase a SIM card (or dongle) for the UMTS network.

Only in Hanga Roa is good mobile reception. Hanga Roa you will also find a number of Internet cafes.

Currency & costs

Currency
Easter Island is paid with Chilean Peso (CLP). There are coins of 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 Peso. There are notes of 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000, and 20000 Peso.

Hanga Roa you can withdraw money with your debit card at a cash machine (ATM). To pin it on your debit card, add the Maestro logo.

We recommend that you also carry US dollars or Euros in cash. Euros are increasingly accepted or substituted, however, often at a favorable price. The major credit cards are in the larger hotels, restaurants and shops accepted.

Tipping
In principle, tipping is not mandatory, but if you have received exceptional service then you can express your appreciation by giving a small tip. Service charges and taxes are generally included in the price.

When to go

Climate
Easter Island has a subtropical climate. The temperatures during the summer months are around 15 to 25 degrees and during the winter months around 25 to 30 degrees. The Easter Island has no typical rainy season, like most of the other islands in the South Pacific.

What to wear for the climate
When you plan your visit to the Easter Island it is best to bring light summer clothing.

Consider a thin raincoat (for walks) and plastic sandals or reef shoes (for protection against coral). Bring a hat or cap to protect against the sun. The shops will otherwise provide virtually everything that you need to enjoy your holiday.

Getting there

Easter Island’s international airport is located next to the main town of Hanga Roa – on the southwestern side of Easter Island. At this airport are both international flights to Lima (Peru) and Papeete (French Polynesia), and domestic flights operated to Santiago. There are no other airports on Easter Island. The airline Lan Airlines performs (inter) national flights (to Lima, Santiago and Papeete).

The flight to Santiago runs daily flight to Papeete twice weekly.

Getting around

The distances on Easter Island are not so great. Hanga Roa has public buses avaliable. The bus services are driven by private companies. The buses usually have all the windows open. It has fixed stops (bus stop), boarding and alighting outside the specified stations is not possible. You pay the driver upon boarding. Outside Hanga Roa there are no bus services.

If you want to explore the Moai and you stay in Hanga Roa, you can do this in several ways. First, you can join a tour by minibus tours (there are a range of routes and destinations). Additionally, you can also choose to explore the island on your own, take a taxi with a rental car. An Adventurous way to explore the island is by a horse or mountain bike.

Health & safety

Health
The climate on Easter Island is pleasant, therefore you usually do not need to take any special medical precautions. However, the best you can go to your family doctor for specific advice.

Easter Island has almost no dangerous or poisonous animals. The most dangerous animal is probably the shark. Inside the reefs in the lagoon from time to time you will see small harmless reef sharks. The larger shark species – such as the hammer head, tiger shark and white shark – like deep water so you are only likely to encounter if you are scuba diving outside of the lagoon.

Remember that the coral is sharp. To prevent sores and possible infections, we recommend that you wear plastic sandals or reef shoes when you are walking or in shallow water over coral is swimming over the coral. If you have to cut the coral the risk of infection is very large, do not wait to long to use antibiotics.

Easter Island is located in the tropics, the air is not polluted and pure. This brings strong solar radiation unhindered on earth. Head covering and a sunscreen with a high protection factor is so highly recommended.
