California (Deserts)

Imperial Valley (County)

Enjoy fishing and migratory-bird watching at the saltier-than-the-ocean Salton Sea. And, there's off-road recreation at the Imperial Sand Dunes, and excellent day hikes during winter throughout the Imperial Valley. Wildflowers are best in spring.

El Centro Naval Air Facility is the winter home of the Blue Angels, so look skyward for dramatic overflights of this precision flight team. In Brawley, one of California's best rodeos -- the CattleCall occurs each November.

In this small border town you'll feel as though you've entered another country. Many signs are in Spanish, and only a simple fence separates the pleasant downtown from Mexicali, its south-of-the-border sister city. Besides the expected plethora of Mexican restaurants, Calexico bursts with Chinese eateries.

EL CENTRO

The desert was made to bloom with the help of massive irrigation in the fields surrounding El Centro. Now El Centro is the agricultural hub of Imperial Valley, and the region is one of the most productive in the nation.
