Hotel in Kiribati (Tarawa - Buariki)

Buariki Hideaway Guesthouse

Buariki is the last Village of north Tarawa. It is easy accesible and just like any villages on the outer islands. Buariki is the perfect destination if you do not have enough time to travel to outer islands but like to Kiribati in its traditional ways.

At the moment, we have three small guest houses. Each house has light and a fan. The houses are built in traditional stile with local material. There is a shared bath room for all houses. A large guest house is under construction. It has three rooms with a seperate bath room.

The beach house serves as a dining room and a place to relax. The floating house is on top off the beautiful reef. It is the perfect place to fish, snorkel, swimm, relax, read a book or simple have a siesta. A Solar powered cooler box keeps your supply of drinks cold. To get there, you can either walk out at low tide and swim to it or use our little dinghi.

Other facilities are BBQ house (picture), shared kitchen, Office with telephone, Bath house with Shower, washing place and modern toilet).

The guesthouse is run by the owner Tinteari and his staff. Tio... Makes sure that you will have a wounderful time. He looks after the guest house and takes you around.

The Guest house has its own specialities:

  • Buariki Tuna salad:  Raw tuna fish with onions on a spicy salad sauce. Served with crusty bread.
  • Tuna Tartar: Raw tuna fish minced together with hot spices. The Tuna Tartar is spread on a fresh garlic bread.
  • Buariki Schnitzel: Tuna steak in Breadcrumbs. Served with Potatoe chips and veges.

Activities

  • Village tour: Walk or cycle to Buariki or any of the next Villages.
  • Eploring: Buariki has lots of Babai pits located in the middle of the island and small paths are leading trough it. The Ozean Side has some nice beaches and bays.
  • Swimming: Have a refreshing swimm at the Causeway (20min walk from the guest house) or inside the Reef.
  • Snorkeling: Buariki ist one of the best places to go snorkeling. The Reef itselfe is very interesting. Blue holes inside the Reef are full of fishes and safe to snorkel or just have a swimm. If you like to go scuba diving, check out Mauri Paradise Resort which is located in the Village of Buariki itselfe.
  • Surfing: Buariki Guest house has one Wind Surfer you can use. If you like to go for a surf on a wave, Naa is one of the best places in Tarawa. You will have to bring your own surfer.
  • Sailing: You can either hire a hoby cat from Kiribati Interisland Sea Charters or try out one of the local fishing canoes.
  • Relaxing: Our Beach House or the Floating house offer a quit place for relaxing, reading a book or have a nap. Alternatively, some of the Ozean beaches are just waiting for you.
  • Fishing: Line Fishing on the Reef with either our Canoe or the Dingi can be very exiting. You also can fish with a rod from the Floating house or by low tide on the Reef. You also can have some fun joining Tio when he go's fishing with the Net. Going after Lobster, Crabs and shells also is lots of fun.
  • Water sports (Fun): Let our little speed boat tow you round with either a Inflatable tube or Waterskis.

Location & Transport

Buariki is the north end of Tarawa. There is no road connecting South-tarawa and North-Tarawa. Alltough, it is possible to cross the channels by low tide with Bicycle, Motor bike or car.
  • Walking: Best time to start walking is about 1 Hour before full lowtide (Tide table). The walk begins at the end of the Road at Buota and you will have to cross the first passage to Abatao right there. The channel is one of the deepest channels and you have to wade trough knee deep water for a couple of meters. After that, you walk trough the Village of Abatao and Tabiteuea. The next few miles are small villages and channels which you pass by full lowtide.
Next, you will reach Marenanuka were the road of north Tarawa starts. From there, there are no more channels to cross as there are causeways all the way up to Buariki. Soon after, you will reach Abaokoro which is the main Village of North Tarawa where the Government station is located. Abakoro also has a rest house where you may able to get something to drink. A car is driving up to Buariki on a un regular base and you may want to ask the council if and when the car is going up in case you want to get a ride up. (We also could arrange that our bicycles are waiting there for you...)
If you go ahead, you get to the largest village at Taborio and Notoue were the catholic school is located. A couple villages more and you reach Buariki. It takes about 6-7 hours to walk up there. Be aware that you will walk some parts at full exposure of the Sun and take precausion.
  • Bicycle: Bicycling up to Buariki is hard work. You often have to cycle in sandy parts, against wind with the sunn glazing down at you. Please do not undertake that journy if you are not in top condition. We do have Bicycles in Buariki and you can use them any time for a journy from Buariki right down to Marenanuka where there is a perfect gravel road.
If you are in top condition and used to cycle longer distances, you will have great fun. Make sure you take enough to drink with you and check out our MAP which display where the best way is to pass the channels.
  • Local Canoe: There is a outrigger canoe going to Buariki on Monday and Wednesday at 15.00 from the wharf at Betio and on Friday at 15.00 from the wharf at Bairiki. The ride takes about 2-3 hours and cost A$ 2.50. (Extra luggage is charged additionaly)
You will sit on that canoe on full exposure to the sun. Please make sure to have a hat and suncreme ready. I use to have two yards of white clothes with me to hide from the sun...
A raincoat also advisable as you are likely to get wet from either waves or rain. The canoe has a closed cargo hole where you can place your luggage. We will arrange someone to meet you in Buariki to bring you to the guest house.
  • Hoby Cat: If you like sailing and have experience on a hoby cat, you can hire one from Kiribati Interisland Sea Charters. Will will provide you with a handheld radio to stay in touch with us.
  • Guest House Canoe: From July 1999, we will have our own Canoe. The Canoe is simular built as the local Canoe. It has eight comfortable seats and is fully covered. It will take about 1 hour from Bairiki to Buariki. Charge is A$ 10.00 one way for each person.
