| The Kona Village is a resort unlike
any other in Hawaii. Unique in its pricing, amenities and features, this
resort is not for those who crave the luxury of central air-conditioning,
cable TV, video games and mega pools. The Kona Village is located on the
Kohala Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii on land that was formerly known
as Kaupulehu to ancient Hawaiians.
It’s a few feet from
the beach, where a natural spring dedicated to the Hawaiian God Kane pours
into the ocean. Built long before its mega resort neighbors, the resort
offers the Hawaii visitor an experience that is more traditional and
serene than that of those newer glitzy hotels. Dress is casual at this
resort.
Beachwear with cover-ups are the uniform of the
day, shirts with sleeves and collars are the male requirement, while what
is suggested for ladies are slacks, skirts and blouses for the evening.
There are no central air-conditioned rooms or
long corridors. Guest accommodations include a choice of several different
types of “hales” or single free standing thatched roof cottages that
accommodate anywhere from three to nine guests. All rooms include a
private lanai, miniature refrigerator (stocked with complimentary
beverages and mixers), coffee maker, safe, and daily maid service. Balmy
breezes and tropical ceiling fans cool each of the hale. Some feature
private outdoor whirlpools to enjoy under a star-lit night. Bedding
options include two twins, two doubles or one King with cribs, day beds
and rollaway available.

Located on one of the few natural white sand
beaches on the Big Island, the Kona Village has many activities to offer
the weeklong visitor. Complimentary unlimited use of snorkels and masks,
kayaks, sailboats and body boards. The protected beach is great for
swimming, snorkeling and sailing. There is also volleyball every day and
complimentary glass bottom boat tours every morning. Optional activities
including deep-sea fishing charters, catamaran snorkel cruises, scuba
lessons, dive excursions, horseback riding and helicopter tours can also
be arranged through the Activities Desk.
For a more active approach, you'll enjoy two
outdoor swimming pools with accompanying whirlpool spas, extensive jogging
trails and tennis with lighted courts, clinics, lessons and tournaments.
Kona Village Resort's Fitness Center features saunas, locker rooms,
showers, outdoor and indoor massage rooms and popular exercise equipment
such as stationary cycles, stair climbers and rowing machines. Fitness
programs designed specifically for guests and draw upon the culture and
spirit of historic Ka`upulehu.
All meals at the Kona Village are included as a
part of the unique Full American Plan. The menus are full of flavors
unique to the region. Fresh vegetables are grown locally and served daily.
Fresh tropical fruits and juices reign over breakfast menus with
old-fashioned country omelets and Belgian waffles. Buffet lunches feature
fresh fish and game of course, and the two oceanfront restaurants put on a
show at dinner that is unforgettable. Soups, salads and entrees that
include influences of Pacific Rim cuisine such as Herb-Macadamia Nut
Crusted Rack of Lamb, Baked Guinea Hen Breast, Fresh Island Fish and
Stir-Fry "Mako." By no means is the food here plain and
unexciting. Even the "lie" menu selections are wonderful.
Then there is the Luau. A tradition for almost 30
years, it is the oldest continuously running luau on the Big Island and
has been judged the best by our guests, visitors, travel writers and
dining critics. There is a Polynesian Revue as well. Some traditional
foods you will sample are Kalua Pig, Steamed Taro, Maki Sushi, Lomi
Salmon, Opihi, Poi, Laulau, Chicken Long Rice, Fresh Fish, Teriyaki Beef,
Haupia Pudding, Banana and Papaya Po`e and Haupia Cake.
Following our `Aha`aina (feast), we present our
Polynesian revue, which features the hula (dances) of Hawai`i. Rhythmic
oli (chants) tell stories of the people, their land and the gods they
served. The Samoan fire knife dance, New Zealand's Maori warrior haka and
the Tahitian tamure are also featured to complete the evening's
entertainment.
Remember that there are no phones in your room at
Kona Village Resort. Nor are there TVs or radios to distract you. Instead,
the tradewinds and the sea provide music to relax and enjoy by. And, the
airport transportation is complimentary. |
