The Hilo Hawaiian Hotel is our favorite choice in Hilo, and makes an excellent base for exploring the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is 45 minutes away by car.

Hilo Hawaiian is the place to start your adventure. It's located on the shores of Hilo Bay, offering breathtaking views of the ocean, Coconut Island, and the towering peak of 13,700' Mauna Kea. For shopping, there's all of downtown Hilo, which is Hawaii's Mecca for arts, crafts and antiques.

There are dozens of restaurants offering everything from traditional Hawaiian lau-lau to fresh New Orleans-style blackened opakapaka (redfish).

But the real attraction of the big Island is its outdoor adventures. Stroll through the gardens. Hike the trails. Traverse the lava flows. Or charter a boat and troll for the world's most exciting game fish, the Pacific Blue Marlin. The real Hawaii is waiting, just outside of your hotel room.
