Diving
O'ahu is a blend of offshore lava formations and exciting wrecks,
accessible by boat or shore. The modest reef structures do not have a
great proliferation of coral growth, but are enhanced by diverse aquatic
fauna. The bottom is relatively sandy, and the water is pacific clear. A
number of ships and other items have been sunk as artificial reef
projects, and attract prolific communities of fish and other underwater
creatures.
South Shore
The
South shore of O'ahu extends from Makapu'u Point, on the east, to Barbers
Point. The majority of sites in this area are concentrated in the Maunalua
Bay and along the Waikiki/Honolulu shorefront. Popular divesites are:
Windward Side Dive Sites (East shore)
Some
of the very best diving that O'ahu has to offer is on the windward side of
the island, between Kahuku and Makapu'u Points - but it comes with a
price. The sites are relatively unspoiled and not over fished because they
are rarely dived, but most of the sites need a boat for access. Vulnerable
to the predominate trade winds during the summer months, and affected by
the north swell during the winter months, the surface conditions can get
rough and uncomfortable. Even during a calm day, the swell can be so bad
that the underwater world can be less than desirable. But, when the
conditions are right.......
North Shore Dive Sites
The
North Shore extends from Ka'ena Point, on the West, to Kahuku Point, on
the North. There are several sites along this coast - including one of the
most popular, but conditions are very weather dependent - and normally
only accessible during the summer months (May through September only).
This is the winter home of the Bonzai Pipeline - renowned in surfing
circles for its legendary swells and offshore breakers - but when the
water is flat - the diving is superb.
Waianae Coast Dive Sites (West shore)
The
remote west part of Oahu is the least visited part of all. But if you make
a visit, you will not regret. The diverse coastline is hides several
stunning bays, caves, beaches and reefs. For divers and snorklers there is
an abundance of sites to explore.
