Lanai
is a private island, as a result the beaches and bays are in very good
condition. They haven't seen the impact that Molokini has. There are
several wonderful places on Lanai where tour boats dock that have
excellent snorkeling and diving from shore.
One place for great snorkeling and diving is
Manele Bay, which is right off the Manele Bay Hotel. The beach is
wonderful and clean, the bay has good visibility most of the time with
lots of tropical reef fish and turtles. It is a reserve. Periodically pods
of spinner dolphins cruise the bay, playing and fishing. It is not
uncommon for the dolphins to 'visit' snorkelers on occasion.
Another excellent scuba dive can be found nearby.
Outside Manele Bay is a rock formation called "Lover's Rock".
Just to the east of that rock formation is another, less visible formation
called "Wash Rock". Situated somewhat between these formations,
at about 60 feet, is a beautiful underwater lava dome cavern called First
Cathedrals. Diving
First Cathedrals can be a great experience. The Cavern is large inside
and has numerous openings that let in light. Occasionally the Manele Bay
dolphins will swim by.
Another location for good snorkeling and diving
is the beach at Club Lanai. This is a beautiful, clean beach somewhat
isolated from the other areas of Lanai. The reef area is quite shallow,
with scuba diving possible a bit further out. There are, of course, many
more diving areas on Lanai, and depending upon weather, they're all very
good. One
