Hawaii Islands (Oahu) |
| Hanauma
Bay |
| A
few miles further on, the magnificent crescent-shaped Hanauma Bay,
formed when the wall of a crater collapsed to let in the sea, is renowned
as Oahu’s best place to snorkel. It makes a nice excursion, and
the sea is full of brightly colored fish; but overuse has killed off most
of the coral near the shore, and the feeding of fish with food sold at the
bay has led to a decline in the range of species. |
|
| Tour
parties were banned in 1991, and attempts are now made to educate visitors
about the fragile ecology of the shallow bay; the daily fee of $3 for
non-Hawaiian visitors helps to keep the numbers down as well. Patches of
living coral, and bigger fish, can be seen if you swim out to the deeper
waters beyond the inner reef, but the currents can be strong, and you
invite coral cuts that can take weeks to heal. Snorkeling equipment can be
rented for $6 (bring a deposit in the form of your passport, credit card
or a large amount of cash). The beach is closed on Wednesday mornings.
The Bus #22 (“The Beach Bus”) runs by the bay from Waikiki every forty
minutes. |
