The culturally and historically minded will want to take an excursion to the northeast coast village of
Maeva, the ancient capital of Huahine. In times gone by, this
village, built on the score of lake Fauna Nui, was the islands main seat
of royal power, where the island's various district chiefs were all of one
family and lived and worshipped peacefully side by side.
Today, Maeva is a rich and exciting
archeological site. Many ancient Tahitian stone temples or "Marae"
have been restored. The remains of prehistoric villages and stone fish
traps, which are still used today, land aluos to a civilization that
existed at least 1000 years ago. The "Fare, Pote'e", a
traditional oval shaped meeting house at the edge of the lake, is a museum
that tells the story of this ancient royal village.
