| Vatulele Island Resort
No
western development, other than the exclusive, unobtrusive, Vatulele (pronounced
Vah-too-lay-lay) Island Resort exists on the lush tropical island of
Vatulele. This relatively small, pristine island (8kms by 3kms) is
completely surrounded by a magnificent coral reef. The resort is tucked
into a coconut plantation on the protected side of the island. Fifteen,
very large villas front 700 metres of white sand beach and lagoon. The
pivotal word here is tranquility.
Vatulele
was 'produced' by Henry Crawford, an Emmy Award winning Australian TV producer,
and Martin Livingston, former manager of Turtle Island Lodge.
Since
opening in 1990 this exclusive retreat has garnered many accolades from the
press and public, and is the only Pacific island resort to be admitted to the
prestigious Relais & Chateau hotel group.
The
hideaway's architecture has been described as a blend of Mediterranean and
traditional Fijian styles - 'thick white masonry walls with wooden shutters
topped by a high pitched Fijian thatched roof producing an airy sun-washed
effect'.

The villas are
large, and include a raised bedroom area with an
American king-sized bed, sitting room, bathroom, vanity in dressing room, wet
bar, and a spacious terrace.
Barefooted
elegance...

|
In
keeping with the owner's philosophy of providing a total escape there are no
telephones, faxes, TV's, newspapers, money transactions...and no shoes! A
magazine described Vatulele as 'barefoot chic'. Henry Crawford says "guests
can wear anything from a ball gown to a sarong, and providing there are no shoes
it all works".
Whilst
the minimum stay at Vatulele is 4 nights, the average stay is 7-8 nights. Guests
find plenty of activity, particularly water oriented - swimming, snorkelling,
scuba diving, sailing, paddling, sport fishing. A tennis court is available as
well as jungle hikes, volleyball and excursions to native villages. (The island
has four Fijian villages and a native population of 900). Guests swim in
underground caves, and visit tidal pools containing famous sacred red prawns.
The coral reef that embraces the island includes excellent dive sites
appropriate for all levels of experience. Vatulele is the only five star island
resort in Fiji with a dedicated dive program and a resident PADI instructor.
Less
than half an hour flight from Nadi's international airport, this resort
represents the perfect example of traditional international sophistication in
harmony with its spectacular natural setting. Little wonder this fantasy getaway
has been included amongst the top 50 hotels in the world.
