| The road from Bonang eventually leads to the old-fashioned town of ORBOST, on the Princes Highway where it crosses the Snowy River. There’s a tranquil picnic spot opposite the Orbost Caravan Park, on the corner of Lochiel and Nicholson streets (tel 03/5154 1097; on-site vans $19–30), with huge gums lining one bank and cows roaming the paddocks on the other. | |
| The Orbost Visitors Centre on Lochiel Street (daily 9am–5pm) books accommodation and tours, but staff don’t seem to be particularly knowledgeable or friendly. Part of the centre has a small exhibition on Victoria’s three types of rainforest. | |
