| To
reach MOUNT BULLER ALPINE VILLAGE, 48km from Mansfield, you ascend
gradually upwards on Summit Road, a smooth, sealed road. With 7000 beds,
24 modern ski lifts and 80km of runs, it has the greatest capacity of any
Australian ski resort. You can even ski at night on the
Bourke Street run and there are cross country routes as well for those who
enjoy nordic skiing.
Mt Buller is located just 230 km or about 3 hours
from Melbourne, and as a result is very popular with Melbournites! It
is so popular that Bourke St (the beginners area) is the busiest ski run
in Australia. Buller is a large mountain with plenty for
everyone and has the longest vertical drop in Victoria. Mt Buller also has
the second largest lifting capacity in Australia (after Perisher Blue).
To ensure good quality snow Mt Buller has installed extensive snow
making facilities and is well prepared to help out mother nature.
An alpine village offers ski in ski out
accommodation along with an ice rink to complete the alpine experience. A
large range of lodging, restaurants, bars, in fact a large range of
everything can be found at Mt. Buller!.
Mt Buller is working hard to promote themselves
as a year round resort and so there are plenty of summer activities on
offer such as horse riding, alpine walking, mountain biking, mountain
safaris and of course the facilities of the Australian Alpine Institute.

| Mount
Buller can be enjoyed at any season, in winter when the snow covers the
mountain and decks the trees in white lace or in the spring and summer
when the mountain is covered in delicately coloured wildflowers and
grasses and you can look out over the expanse of the ranges beyond.
Whenever you go, for whatever the reason, Mount Buller has everything to
offer. |

Stirling |
| Mount
Stirling, a few kilometres northeast, has more than 60km of maintained
trails and is a good place for cross-country skiing. The only
facility here is Mount Stirling Alpine Resort, a large complex at
Telephone Box Junction, 9km from the turn-off left at Mirindah along Mount
Stirling Road. As it’s a day resort, there’s no accommodation, but it
has a visitor centre, a ski school, and rents out skis and mountain bikes.
It also does tours from Mansfield of the Mount Stirling area. All
roads beyond Telephone Box Junction are open only from the beginning of
November until the beginning of June, weather permitting.
The fifty-kilometre Circuit Road from
Telephone Box Junction circumnavigates Mount Stirling, and an access track
from this road leads to Craig’s Hut, which was used as a film set
for The Man from Snowy River. As sections of Circuit Road are very
rough for 2WD vehicles even in good weather conditions, you’ll really
need a 4WD for this route. In summer, Stirling Experience does 4WD tours
to Craig’s Hut and other destinations around the Mount Buller–Mount
Stirling area.
Facilities
|
| The
ABOM Hotel & Bistro, on Summit Road on Mount Buller, is the hub
of the Alpine Village when it is open in winter. There are great views
from here, and further up, on the summit of Mount Buller, there’s
an even more spectacular panorama west to Lake Eildon, north to farmlands
and east to Falls Creek and Mount Hotham. The huge Arlberg Hotel,
53 Summit Rd, provides entertainment in ski season, and has everything
from fast food to an expensive restaurant.
In winter the budget-conscious can stay at the Mount
Buller YHA Hostel, on The Avenue right in the centre of the Village
(advance booking essential), which has self-catering facilities. The
self-catering ABV Lodge has beds in bunk rooms and is open all year
round.
