Mount Baw Baw National Park (& Ski Resort)
The ski village at MOUNT BAW BAW, near the edge of the Baw Baw National Park, is considerably south of all the resorts and is, strictly speaking, in Gippsland. It’s a quiet little place, commanding magnificent views south over much of Gippsland and consisting mainly of private lodges.

Getting to the resort is a major problem, its difficult accessibility is a principal factor hindering its development. There’s no public transport to the mountain, and the closest town is Noojee, 48km west. The road between the town and the resort is narrow, steep and winding. To make matters worse, there are lots of logging trucks thundering along, so take care.

This park offers outstanding bushwalking, vistas and skiing . Baw Baw Village which sits on the western edge of the Park has downhill skiing suitable for beginners as well as good cross country skiing and is the main access point to the Park. Baw Baw National Park covers the Steep slopes of Mt Erica, Mt St Phillack (the highest at 1566m) and the Thompson and Aberfeldy valleys. A sub-alpine area, the most abundant trees are snow gum and alpine ash as well as mountain ash, stringybark, red stringy bark and silvertop. The park can be reached from Melbourne via Yarra Junction and Moojee or via Moe and Willow Grove.

Mt Baw Baw is the closest alpine resort to Melbourne at just 157km which equates to about 2.5 hours drive.  Clearly one of the "smaller" resorts Mt Baw Baw has a lot to offer the beginner and improving skier/boarder. With a huge variety of beginner and intermediate terrain it is a great place to learn, perfect your technique or just have fun in general!

Due to its location on the south east side of the Alps, Baw Baw often gets good snow and can hold it much longer than many of the large resorts.  Testament to this is the fact that Baw Baw has survived comfortably on natural snow alone while many of the larger resorts rely on snowmaking to survive.

There are nine ski lifts (1 chair, 3 T bars and 5 Platters) as well as 10km of groomed XC trails, and a lift day-pass costs about $40, a much more reasonable price than at other resorts. As at Mount Buffalo, the ski runs are mainly for beginners and intermediates. In addition to downhill skiing, you can ski cross-country on 9km of groomed trails.

The more experienced XC skiers can follow trails all the way to Mt St Gwinear 5.5km to the east.  There is a lot on offer for snowboarders with heaps of natural hits and many of the runs off the Malteese Cross T Bar forming natural half pipes.  Mt Baw Baw offers a fully qualified ski school with local and overseas instructors.  There is a dedicated toboggan slope for those just wanting a snow experience!

Mt Baw Baw targets the family skiiers and boarders with significantly cheaper lift tickets and a family resort atmosphere bred from the large number of private lodges on the mountain.  The spectacular scenery on offer from Baw Baw has to be seen to be believed with stunning views across the LaTrobe Valley to Western Port Bay and Wilsons Promontory.
