| Twenty-one kilometres north of Maryborough is DUNOLLY, an attractive town filled with many distinctive old buildings and with kurrajong trees lining the main street. The town of Dunolly celebrates its historical origins during the Dunolly Gold Rush weekend each year. And so it should, being the district which has turned up more nuggets in its time than any field in Australia. A visit coinciding with these events is an experience. | |
| The goldfields here produced more nuggets than any in Australia, including the largest ever found – “Welcome Stranger”, from nearby Moliagul. This 65kg nugget was found in 1869 by two Cornish miners just 3cm below the surface as they were working around the roots of a tree. It was valued at £10,000, old money. | |
