| Bairnsdale | |
| Bairnsdale is a neat and charming town found on the banks of the Mitchell River, between Sale and Lakes Entrance on the Princes Highway. Both Sale and Bairnsdale put the visitor in easy rich of the high country to the north. Most notable this means the Alpine National Park, the Avon Wilderness Area and the Mitchell River National Park. An ideal destination is the Den of Nargun, a ferny grotto in the Mitchell River National Park which is popular for picnics and bushwalking. | |
| The
town serves as another departure point for the lakes to the south. The
efficient staff at the tourist office on Main Street (daily
9am–5pm) will provide all the local information you’ll need. The well
set-up exhibition at the Krowathunkuloong Keeping Place, parallel
to the Princes Highway at 37–53 Dalmahoy St (Mon–Fri 9am–5pm; $4),
explains the history of the Gunai people.
The Bairnsdale Backpackers Hostel, at 119 McLeod St, is a very friendly, if somewhat ramshackle place to stay, close to the old train station. Bairnsdale Air Charter (tel 03/5152 4617) arranges cheap scenic flights from the Bairnsdale Aerodrome over the extensive waterways of the Gippsland Lakes (10min; from $25 per person; minimum 2 people).
