| Avoca | |
| AVOCA, 26km southwest of Maryborough on the Pyrenees Highway, was another rich source of alluvial gold. It boasts a collection of nineteenth-century buildings, including a chemist’s shop established in 1854 and believed to be the oldest in Victoria. These days, the area around Avoca, known as the Pyrenees region, is increasingly known for its vineyards. | |
| A cluster of them is located in or near Moonambel, a hamlet 17km northwest of Avoca: one to aim for is the Warrenmang Winery Resort on Mountain Creek Road (daily 9am–5pm), which has a picturesque setting, an excellent restaurant, and offers accommodation in timber lodges. | |
