Magnificent views, a warm and friendly atmosphere and a journey in comfort are all trademarks of travelling with Countrylink. When you board one of our XPTs you can be confident that your trip in one of the world's newest rail fleets will be an experience to remember.

Through huge windows, the panorama and drama of the Australian east coast landscape will unfold before you. Once aboard, the most you'll have to do is decide which snacks, meals or refreshments you'd like to enjoy.

Our travel centre staff and on-board crews are trained to help make your journey an enjoyable one, so don't hesitate to ask them for any assistance.

Countrylink is proud to show you the wonders of New South Wales, Brisbane and Melbourne and wishes you a very special journey. Now sit back, relax and share the Countrylink XPT experience.

The Countrylink XPT (Xpress Passenger Train) was first introduced to New South Wales in 1982. In 1993, brand new carriages were delivered and the existing carriages were completely refurbished with new seats, carpet and curtains. The Countrylink XPT travels from Sydney to Brisbane, Melbourne, Dubbo, Grafton and Murwillumbah.

Based on British Rail's Intercity 125, the Countrylink XPT is built in Australia and has been adapted to Australian conditions.

On 18 September 1992 at Culcairn, north of albury, New South Wales, the Countrylink XPT set a new speed record of 193 km/h. Its maximum operating speed is 160 km/h.

On the XPT (Express Passenger Train) you can choose from First Class Sleepers and Economy Class. The XPLORER offers First Class Seating and Economy Class.

Seats

As you recline into your seat, you'll be pleased to know they are styled on the seats of some of Europe's most acclaimed trains. And, unlike other transport modes, our seats can be rotated to easily accommodate a group of four people.
Our ergonomically designed seats feature footrests, drop-down tables and armrests, which can be neatly folded upwards to give you even more room to move.

The seats are Australian made and are styled on the seats of the acclaimed French TGV train. They have been specially designed to make you as comfortable as possible during your journey. All seats face the direction of travel, but on request the seats can be rotated to form a group of four.

  • First class seats feature a reclining back which is infinitely adjustable from the upright position to a 40 degrees recline. There is a footrest for added comfort and a drop-down table fitted to the seat backs. For seats without another seat in front, a table may be attached to the wall. The armrests may be folded upwards out of the way if desired.
  • The economy class seats recline from the upright position to 28 degrees. Each seat has a footrest and a drop-down table on the seat back. For seats without another seat in front, a table may be attached to the wall. The armrests may be folded upwards out of the way if desired.

Sleeper Cabins

The sleeping car is only available for nighttime use on the Sydney - Melbourne, Melbourne - Sydney, Sydney - Brisbane and Murwillumbah - Sydney routes. There is one sleeping car per train (First Class Twin Sleeper), providing accommodation for 18 passengers in twinette-style compartments. Private shower and toilet facilities are located between each compartment. Towels and bed linen are provided and any extra items (eg pillows, blankets) are available on request.

When set up for daytime use, the car has 27 seats, three in each compartment. The cabin is designed to allow you to see the passing scenery through windows on both sides of the car. The curtains may be drawn for your privacy. There are luggage shelves above the toilet/shower and corridor, and small items that you may require during the journey can be stowed under the seat. A small cabinet is provided for you to hang your day clothing.

Each compartment is equipped with portable tray tables, a mirror and a power outlet suitable for the use of a 240 volt electric shaver only. It is fitted with main lights, reading lights and night lights, a rubbish receptacle and Passenger Attendant call button.

While you're thinking of far-away places, our climate-controlled air-conditioning is breathing fresh air throughout the train. And to keep you cosy, the temperature is increased slightly at night. If you're planning to catch up on some reading, all of our seats feature, within arm's reach, individual reading lights that can be swivelled to suit you. Each XPT car has a toilet at one end. Men's toilets are fitted with a 240 volt AC shaver outlet.

Facilities:
  • Air Conditioned: The Countrylink XPT is fully air-conditioned. The temperature is raised slightly at night, while in the day, the double-glazed windows help keep the interior cool and reduce glare.
  • Lighting: Individual reading lights are located in the panel above each seat. These are operated by a switch adjacent to the light and can be swivelled to suit your personal requirements. Carriage illumination is by solft fluorescent ceiling lights. At night when ceiling lights are extinguished, aisle lights provide enough illumination to enable you to move about the train.
  • Paytel Payphones: Countrylink XPTs have a Paytel Payphone located in Car B. Paytel phonecards of $5 and $10 values are available and can be purchased from the Buffet Car (Car C). Telstra phonecards cannot be used on these phones. Instructions for the use of the Paytel Payphone are available at the buffet and near the phone in Car B. Paytel phonecards can also be used on payphone services on Queensland Rail trains. Visa, Mastercard and Bankcard are also accepted by Paytel Payphones.
  • Washrooms/Toilets: These are located at the end of each car. The toilet may be used while the train is stationary. Men's toilets are fitted with a 240V outlet, suitable for a shaver only.
  • Smoking: Smoking is not permitted on any Countrylink service.

Food & Drinks

To make your journey with us positively relaxing, the XPT buffet serves hot and cold meals and scrumptious snacks for enjoyment at your seat. For our travellers over 18 years of age, there's a liquor selection featuring fine Australian wines. People travelling alone with small children, people with disabilities, or the elderly who are unable to visit the buffet, can arrange to be served by our on-board crew. Even those travellers with special dietary requirements can be catered for. Just let us know at the time of booking. Chilled water is available throughout the journey in the vestibule at one end of each car.

On the Countrylink XPT, the buffet car supplies for all three classes beverages, light snacks and an assortment of hot and cold meals, for enjoyment at your seat. Credit card facilities are available (minimum $10). Announcements about our on-board catering services will be made throughout your journey. Seat service can be provided to elderly or disabled passengers on request. Special dietary requirements can be catered for with 48 hours notice.

It is not permitted to bring alcohol aboard any Countrylink services. Alcohol will only be serviced to persons 18 years of age and over - proof of age may be required.

Luggage & Allowance

A generous allowance of 50 kilograms of luggage can be conveyed free of charge. This allows two items not exceeding 25kg each, plus one piece of hand luggage. Passengers can carry their own luggage aboard and store it in the luggage racks at the ends of each carriage and on racks above their seats.

Alternatively, they can book a maximum of two items on the train at most stations.
This must be done at least 30 minutes before departure. Limited space is available for bicycles and surfboards. These must be booked in advance and there is a small charge.

Special Needs

Wheelchairs, designed to fit the aisles, can be provided. Attendents are on duty at all times during the trip for your security. They are trained in First Aid and have access to bottled oxygen in emergencies.
