Accommodation on the Train

Resulting from a collaboration between Queensland Rail and Venice Simplon-Orient-Express - the company that re-introduced the world's most celebrated train in Europe and also operates the exotic Eastern & Oriental Express - the Great South Pacific Express is no ordinary train.

Up to 20 carriages long, the Great South Pacific Express comprises of superb sleeping carriages, all en suite and air-conditioned, and a variety of Restaurant and Lounge cars. The service is personal and unobtrusive in the traditional European manner with a steward in every carriage to attend your needs.

On board, passengers are entertained by a pianist as well as enjoying the views from the Observation Car - the best place to experience the scenery as it glides by.

The Great South Pacific Express travels between Sydney/Brisbane (one night); Brisbane/Cairns (two nights); or the whole journey between Sydney/Cairns which includes an overnight stop in Brisbane.

INTERIOR DESIGN - COMPARTMENTS/SUITES

Passengers can choose to stay in a Pullman Compartment where daytime seating converts to upper and lower berths; State Compartments where day time seating converts to twin beds; or a Commissioners Compartment with a double bed.

MORE ABOUT SLEEPING ACCOMMODATION
All compartments are elegantly appointed with inlaid woods, antique brass and the modern comforts of air conditioning and an en suite shower and WC. Sockets are standard Australian outlets (240 volts) and each compartment has a hair dryer and personal safe. There are three grades of accommodation on board the Great South Pacific Express.

  • Pullman Compartments are 5.5 square metres with daytime seating converting to upper and lower bunks.
  • State Compartments are 7.4 square metres with daytime seating converting to two single beds at floor level at night.
  • Commissioners Suites are 13.1 square metres, daytime seating and a fixed double bed. There is ample room to entertain one or two fellow travellers. The Presidential Suite also comes with a complimentary mini-bar.

All compartments are en suite with a wc. Each compartment also has air conditioning and a personal safe.

LUGGAGE
It is strongly advised that you only take into your compartment, one or two light cases packed with everything you need for your journey on board. All extra luggage can be checked in at the start of your journey where it will not be accessible until you reach your destination.)
