The Ghan, a Train Journeys in Australia

Travelling First Class

First Class sleeping carriages on board The Ghan allow passengers the privacy of their own well appointed sleeper cabins complete with dedicated attendants at your service. These cabins are designed to make your train journey comfortable and memorable. Passengers can choose from two types of First Class accommodation - single or twin sleeper cabins.

Each cabin is air-conditioned, so that an even temperature is maintained on your journey through the extremes of Australian weather conditions, from green hills to searing desert temperatures. First Class passengers can visit the First Class Lounge to relax and take in the scenery, enjoy refreshments and talk to other passengers.

First Class passengers all receive a momento of their trip, a complimentary toiletries kit. Information on the train journey such as a route map and service information can be found in your complimentary on board compendium.

First Class Single Cabins all have a toilet and wash basin, with showers located at the end of each carriage. There is a comfortable lounge chair in each cabin which allows you to spend the day in comfort while gazing at the landscape passing by outside. At night the cabin converts to a sleeper with crisp sheets, pillow and duna. All cabins are fitted with fresh towels, reading lamps, wardrobe, storage space, vanity mirror, foldaway table and a 3 pin 240/110AC power point.

First Class Twin Sleepers are fitted with a comfortable three seater lounge. This converts to ready made upper and lower sleeping berths at night with fresh sheets, pillows and dunas. First Class Twin Sleepers have an en-suite which includes a shower, wash basin, toilet and fresh towels. Also included in the cabin are: 3 pin 240/110AC power point, wardrobes, full length mirror, reading lamps, foldaway table, in cabin radio, PA system and luggage storage space.

Once the journey is under way First Class passengers can enjoy the ever changing views, from the comfort of the luxurious lounges. The First Class Lounges are designed in themes inspired by local history, culture and the outback countryside, and the lounge car may be changed for the return journey to allow you to experience new interior surroundings.

The Flinders Lounge

Since 1802 when Matthew Flinders sighted the southern peaks of the Flinders Ranges from his ship in Spencer Gulf, these picturesque mountains have become a major attraction for visitors.

The brilliant colours of the many wild flowers, the sandstone gravels, and the textures of Australian timbers provided the inspiration to create a restful haven for passengers.

The Dreamtime Lounge

The Ghan passes through ancient mountain ranges, over red baked earth and oceans of sandhills, where the land remains unchanged since before The Dreamtime, the Aboriginal beginnings of this magnificent land. The design of the Dreamtime Lounge is inspired by Aboriginal culture and history.

The Stuart Restaurant

First Class passengers dine in secluded luxury aboard The Ghan, in the Stuart Restaurant, which was named after one of Australia's most famous explorers - Charles Stuart. All meals are included in the purchase of a First Class ticket. There may be several sittings for meals. The Senior Dining Car Steward will contact all passengers after the train departs to determine which sitting is preferred.

Breakfast usually commences at 7.00am and dinner from 6.30pm.

Fine a la carte menus are available for breakfast and dinner featuring native Australian cuisine, cooked to perfection. Choose from dishes such as Chicken Breast Kakadu or Kangaroo Fillet with Bush Tomato Chutney. A comprehensive wine and beverage list is available featuring some excellent Australian wines. Vegetarian, children's and limited special dietary meals are available on request.
