AAT King's Tours

AAT King’s origins can be traced back to the 1920’s with George Page offering a modest passenger transportation service from Melbourne to Brighton using a Model T Ford. Around this time, George’s brother, Abe, started a garage business known as Melbourne Motor Coach Service in Elsternwick, which later moved to Brighton, and provided the service arm for George’s buses, a modest fleet of 10 buses.

In the ensuing years, the company developed as a major force in Australian extended coach touring, venturing into weekend and interstate holidays, and even extended camping safaris to outback Australia.

The outstandingly successful partnership between the two most respected coach touring families in Melbourne, Page and McGeary, over a period of more than 30 years, saw the company acquire AAT King’s in 1983 from what was then TAA-Mayne Nickless.

In 1964, Abe Page passed the business on to his son, Mayer Page. Since then, Mayer and his family have maintained an active role in the day to day running of AAT King’s. Mayer’s sons, Darren and Matthew, joined the company in 1991, followed by Justin in 1993. All three third generation members are eagerly "learning the ropes" and taking their place within the larger corporate "family".

Today, AAT King’s stands as a strong, independent and diverse coach touring company with more than 350 staff and six overseas offices in addition to the South Melbourne located Melbourne head office, with interstate branches, operating some 87 coaches on some 230 long distance tours per annum.

The Tours

AAT King’s offers a quality product. Our tours are all well-planned, yet flexible, and cater to a broad cross-section of the market.

    Accommodated Tours

Our flagship products are our luxury accommodated, extended coach tours. These tours offer quality four or five star accommodation in centrally-located hotels or motels, with brand new, luxury coaches and comprehensive itineraries. They are well patronised by the affluent 45+ market who are looking for the relaxation and security of a fully planned itinerary within a framework of flexibility.

    Camping Safaris

Secondly, AAT King’s offers a variety of camping tours for the soft adventurer. These are tent accommodated in AAT King’s-approved camping grounds, again travelling by luxury coach. Camping safaris appeal to a wide selection of the population with singles, families and active elderlies participating.

    4WD Adventure Safaris

These tours offer off-the-beaten-track touring to areas that no ordinary vehicle can travel, in groups of only 20 passengers. Most nights are enjoyed sleeping out in the bush. Tours operate generally in the Northern Territory and Cape York. 4WD Adventure Safaris appeal to a fairly affluent market, including professionals and those with an interest in "eco" tourism.

    Modular touring

AAT King’s offers a unique range of touring product for the independent traveller. This programme allows the client to build their own touring programme, staying in luxury accommodation with their choice of itinerary. The majority of these tours are operated in the Northern Territory where AAT King’s has, by far, the largest coach presence.

Over 20 coaches are based at Ayers Rock, where we have 10 Japanese speaking Tour Guides. Our exclusive tour contract at Ayers Rock has recently been extended for a further 5 years. A further 25 coaches are based in Alice Springs and Darwin.

Our modular tours are currently experiencing rapid growth. The market is broad, and covers almost all market segments.

    Day Tours

AAT King’s operates an extensive day tour programme in Sydney, Melbourne, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock and Darwin. These tours are popular with intercity tourists and overseas tourists.

The Fleet

The rugged and varying conditions found through Australia demand highly specialised, reliable vehicles. AAT King’s provides the vehicle that best suits the terrain and the itinerary. These vehicles are also available for charter touring specific to individual needs. These vehicles range in size and are licensed to carry between 16 and 68 passengers.

Two new Mercedes-Benz built "extended" coaches, which are two and a half metres longer than standard coaches, and catering for an extra 11 passengers, are a unique addition to our fleet. In the past year, a total of 25 new vehicles were purchased, at a total outlay of $15,000,000. This means the average age of our "long haul" fleet is no more than six months, at the present time.

Customers who travel on our luxury accommodated tours and selected camping tours are transported in the ultimate comfort of Mercedes-Benz coaches. These vehicles are all fitted with the latest in state-of-the-art facilities including restroom, air conditioning with individual controls, wall to wall carpet, individual reading lights, reclining cloth seats and large, tinted panoramic windows.

For 4WD adventure passengers, transportation is by our unique Mercedes-Benz Unimogs, which cater for smaller groups of up to 20 passengers. These rugged 4WD vehicles are fully equipped with radio transmitter, power winch and ample storage areas. They have the power and versatility to tackle rough country, whilst providing good passenger comfort. Six of these most sophisticated off-road vehicles are now operating on safaris in the Northern Territory and far North Queensland.

AAT King’s also operates four Mercedes LA911 29-seat four wheel drive vehicles, which are used for specialised touring, and a further three purpose built ISUZU 4WD vehicles for touring within the Kakadu National Park.

All AAT King’s depots in Melbourne, Sydney, Alice Springs, Ayers Rock and Darwin are manned between the hours of 6.30 a.m. and 6.30 p.m., 7 days a week, with duty officers on call outside those hours.

HF Radio Facility

Our company is the only extended holiday coach touring company in Australia that has a High Frequency Radio facility on board every coach.

This means that we’re able to respond quickly to breakdowns, passenger illness or accidents encountered in our travels in the outback. Our ability to contact the Royal Flying Doctor service in emergency situations can save lives.
