Ulverstone
Ulverstone is situated on the banks of the Leven River 21km west of Devonport. The beautiful beaches, spectacular scenery including mountains, waterfalls, and raging rivers, make Ulverstone the prefect place for a holiday in the North West. The town has a good range of accommodation, great picnic spots, barbecues, playgrounds and sporting facilities. Attractions include limestone caves and the magnificent Leven Canyon.
ULVERSTONE, where the Leven River flows into the sea, is a popular family holiday centre, with unpolluted beaches and plenty of activities to occupy children, including the Ulverstone Waterslide (Dec–Feb 10am–7pm; $2.50).

Accommodation possibilities include B&B in the pleasant, two-storey Ocean View Guesthouse at 1 Victoria St and the splendid 1903 red-brick Furners Hotel at 42 Reibey St, the latter complete with carved blackwood staircase and an excellent bistro. You can pick up free maps and information from the Ulverstone Visitor Information Centre, behind the post office (Mon–Fri 9am–3.30pm, Sat & Sun 9am–3pm; tel 03/6425 2839).

In the picturesque hop-growing countryside south of Ulverstone, the Gunns Plains Caves (hourly tours daily 10am–4pm; 50min; $6) are worth visiting for their remarkable limestone formations. Huge shapes – looking like rashers of streaky bacon but as big as blankets – hang from the roof; when lit from behind, they glow a succulent red. A permanent stream feeds an underground lake, and platypuses and possums enjoy the cool temperatures. You’ll need your own transport to get here.
