Tasmania (Northern Region)

Penguin
Penguin is situated 31km west of Devonport on three small bays below the spectacular Dial Range ,which rises steeply behind the town. The town is named after the fairy penguins who live in the rookeries along the coast. They can be observed during the summer months. There are good bushwalking tracks in the Dial Range and the view from Mt Montgomery at the northern end of the range is magnificent.
To get here follow the old Bass Highway west from Ulverstone along the coastline, passing the Three Sisters and Goat Islands bird sanctuaries, and Penguin Point where Little penguins roost.

PENGUIN itself, 12km along the highway, is a neatly tended town with three safe swimming beaches. Tacky blue-and-white penguin-shaped garbage bins line the main street, culminating in the two-metre-high “big penguin” in the foreshore park. Five kilometres outside town, there are walking trails in the Dial Range State Forest.
