Tasmania (Northern Region) |
| Northwest Coast | |
| A
succession of Tasmania’s larger towns dot the conservative, agricultural
northwest coast, including the cities of Devonport
and Burnie, and the smaller community of
older Stanley, on a peninsula jutting
into the Bass Strait.
The Bass Highway, which connects them, becomes spectacularly beautiful beyond Wynyard, passing Table Cape, Boat Harbour Beach and Rocky Cape National Park, though it skirts the very northwest tip (privately owned by the Van Diemen’s Land Company). |
|
| At
the end of the highway is Marrawah,
from where you can head to Arthur River for
a cruise. Tasmanian Redline Coaches (tel 03/6331 3233) run services from
Devonport to Burnie (daily) and from Burnie to Smithton (daily except
Sun), stopping at all towns along the Bass Highway; there is no public
transport to Marrawah or Arthur River.
