| Seppeltsfield, off the highway 4km northwest of Tanunda, must be the most spectacular of the wineries (tastings Mon–Fri 10am–5pm, Sat 10.30am–4.30pm, Sun 11am–4pm). During the Great Depression the Seppelt family paid their workers in food to plant an avenue of date palms from Marananga to Seppeltsfield. On a hill halfway along the palm-lined avenue is the Seppelt family mausoleum, resting place of the male members of the family. | |
| The estate itself was founded in 1851 when Joseph Seppelt, a wealthy merchant, arrived from Silesia with his workers: he turned to wine making when his tobacco crop failed. Seppelts became the largest winery in the colony, having everything from a port-maturation cellar to a distillery, vinegar factory and brandy bond store. All have been preserved in their original condition, and can be seen on a tour (Mon–Fri 11am, 1pm, 2pm & 3pm, Sat & Sun 11.30am, 1.30pm & 2.30pm; $3). | |
