South Australia (Flinders Ranges)

Peterborough
Peterborough is a historic railway town and an important stop on the way to the Flinders Ranges, It is one of only two railway junction towns in the world where three railway line gauges meet. It is the last place of any size east of Mount Remarkable, before the Barrier Highway continues to the border with New South Wales.
Steamtown Peterborough is a preservation society which keeps a few steam trains running on 90km of scenic track between Eurelia and Orroroo; for times (usually only on a few holidays) enquire at the information centre in a restored train carriage on Main Street (daily 9am–4pm; tel 08/8651 2708).

Small-scale gold prospectors bring their finds to be processed and refined here at the state’s only Gold Battery, which can be viewed by appointment (tel 08/8651 2969). YUNTA, 100km further, is a collection of roadhouses and services at the start of a backdoor route into the Flinders Ranges; it’s 300km of gravel road from here to Arkaroola, 200km to Hawker.
