South Australia (Southeast Region)

Millicent
Millicent lies inland and is a convenient base from which to explore the coastal towns of Beachport, Robe and Southend. It began life as a rural centre, but earlier this century, large plantations of trees were planted in the district to take advantage of the favourable climate and rainfall for forestry. Today Millicent is a busy commercial centre for the forest industry. There are several paper mills and sawmills in the area.
Tantanoola Caves Conservation Park
The Tantanoola Caves are twenty one kilometres from Millicent. The complex nestles inside an ancient marine cliff which towers over the highway. Masses of delicate formations arch overhead as you stroll through this highly decorated single chamber on a special pathway built without steps. Outside the caves a cliff-top walking trail has views of forests, beach dunes and extinct volcanoes. Adventure caving tours are available for people who prefer to get off the well-trodden path and traverse caves as yet undeveloped.

Attractions

  • MILLICENT NATIONAL TRUST MUSEUM AND ADMEUA GALLERY This has the reputation of being one of the best regional museums in the state. Its displays are strongly thematic. The complex evolved around the site and buildings of the old primary school (1873) where the Millicent, Victoriana, Aboriginal and Natural History Rooms are located. Sixteen restored horse drawn vehicles are featured in the museum, along with fully restored farm implements, tools and machinery. The Admella Gallery displays a great collection of Australian craft work.
  • MILLICENT SHELL GARDEN This extensive mural work of glass, old china and shells took thirty nine years to complete. Children delight in walking among the many nursery rhyme characters dotted among the flower beds. A wall shows a map of the Australian states and the Waltzing Matilda story. A modern touch is the tribute to Australia's great win in the 1983 America's Cup.
