Selfdrives

Selfdrive holidays are a excellent way to travel around Australia. Travel in your own Rental car or Camper at your own pace, plan your own itinerary and explore Australia the way you want. Just mind the long distances. What seems as a couple of hours drive away on the map, can turn out in a strenuous day of driving. Australia has a good network of well maintained roads and highways but around the cities there is also heavy traffic. In the outback on the desert highways and tracks be aware of the road-trains (huge trucks with several trailers).

For the adventurers at hart there are dusty tracks to take you into the Outback. These roads require a lot of planning and preparing before you set off.

Outback-travel
Take precautions when traveling independently in isolated outback areas. Plan your trip well ahead with the aid of a reputable map and always inform someone where you want to go (e.g. the car rental company). Stay on recognized routes and check facilities and road conditions before departure. Make sure you carry ample supplies of petrol (gas) and water. Allow at least 4.5 litres (1 gallon) of water per person per day. In the case of a breakdown, stay with your vehicle where there is shade and protection from the heat.

Driving laws
Australians drive on the left hand side of the road. The maximum speed limit in cities and towns is 60km/h (35mph) and 100km/h (62mph) on country roads and highways, unless signs indicate otherwise. Strict drink-driving laws apply and it is compulsory for drivers and passengers to wear seatbelts at all times.

Driving
A tourist may drive in Australia with his driving license from his home country. A translation of international driving license is not compulsory but recommended. The original licenses must be carried when driving, in addition to a eventual translation and/or international permit and a valid passport.

Motoring clubs
The Australian Automobile Association (AAA) is affiliated with motoring organizations in most countries of the world. This entitles visitors to free roadside emergency breakdown service, travel guides, route maps, accommodation and camping directories and touring information. For information and assistance contact motoring associations in each Australian state.

Petrol (gas)
Petrol in Australia comes in leaded and unleaded grades and is sold by the litre. Petrol costs around 1 aud per litre. LPG gas and diesel is also available. In the more populated areas are plenty of petrol stations. If you plan to travel through others parts it is wise to check on availability of fuel first. You can always check with the renting depot of your vehicle. Trading hours of the petrol stations will vary, most will accept major international credit cards.
