This is one of the most beautiful drives in Australia. Take your time and enjoy. Day 1. Melbourne to Lorne: Travel southeast to the Mornington Peninsula, backed up by the surf of Bass Strait. At Sullivan Bay and Sorrento, visit the site of Victoria's first official European settlement in 1803. Take the passenger ferry across Port Phillip Bay to Queenscliff. Visit Bells Beach at Torquay before travelling along the Great Ocean Road to Lorne. Overnight: Cumberland Resort Day 2. Lorne to Port Fairy: The Great Ocean Road provides fabulous views from the steep cliffs overlooking the sea, as it hugs the coastline to Apollo Bay. Continue to Warnambool and onto colonia town of Port Fairy. Overnight: Seacombe House Motor Inn Day 3. Port Fairy to Mount Gambier: Visit Portland, with over 200 19th century buildings and homes, then drive over the border to South Australia. Overnight: Mingbool North Bed & Breakfast Day 4. Mt Gambier to Barossa Valley: Continue west towards Adelaide, with its Mediterranean climate, its white sandy beaches and green hills. Cross the mighty Murray River at Murray Bridge. Visit historic Hahndorf and continue through the Adelaide Hills to Tanunda. Overnight: Day 5. Barossa Valley: Day to explore the valley and taste the wine. Day 6. Barossa Valley to Adelaide: This is a short drive, so there is still time to see the city. |
