- Walking Tracks
Our Island’s National Park offers a
great variety of walking tracks offering magnificent views of the
Whitsunday Islands.
The various peaks and bays of South Molle
Island are quite accessible via approximately 20km of walking trails
through the National Park. All trails are well kept, well signposted,
and will repay the walker with a diversity of vegetation and wildlife,
delightful destinations, and expansive views along the way.
It’s generally a good idea to take water with
you, and let someone know where you’re going, preferably Reception
Staff.
Also remember that the island is a National
Park, therefore, the entire area is protected, and nothing should be
harmed or removed.
SPION KOP WALK (3.5KM - ONE WAY)
The track begins near the first green on the
golf course. Looking across the course, you can see your destination:
the summit of Spion Kop.
Initially, the track passes through open
eucalypt forest, before heading into rainforest. Entering the
rainforest area, a colony of fruit bats (flying foxes) can usually be
seen hanging from the branches on the left side of the track. You will
most likely hear the squealing and chattering noises before you
actually see the bats.
The track next winds it’s way to the
‘saddle’, a ridge where the other side of the island can be seen
through open grassland dotted with native grass trees, and shrubs
growing at an angle due to the prevailing south-easterly trade winds.
This open grassland was utilised by the first settler on South Molle
Island, Henry Lamond, to graze his sheep and cattle.
From the saddle many other islands are
visible, including Mid Molle, North Molle, Hayman and Hook Islands to
the north. Toward the south, Whitsunday, Hamilton and Dent Islands are
in view.
Turning left at the saddle the track
traverses the eastern side of the island and crosses an area of
shattered rock on the hillside. This is a naturally occuring volcanic
rock quarry which was often visited by the Aboriginals, and used to
make weapons and tools. In fact, the Aboriginal name for South Molle
was ‘Whyrriba”. meaning stone axe.The track continues to ascend
through another section of forest, on to the summit, where a panoramic
view of all the islands in the area can be seen. Spion Kop is actually
a Dutch/Afrikaans word meaning “Spying Head” or “Lookout”,
named by the Bauer family, who had a South African background.
