About Lizard Island

Captain James Cook first ventured into these unchartered reaches by necessity in 1770 - the last chance for a crew seeking freedom from the beautiful but deadly coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef. Lizard Island promised these early travelers an unparalleled vantage point and a welcome source of fresh provisions. Some two centuries later, little has changed on Lizard.

Lizard Island is Australia's northernmost island resort. It is located 240 kilometres north of Cairns and 92 kilometres north east off the coast from the remote township of Cooktown. Lizard Island is a National Park covering over 1000 hectares, with 24 sandy beaches and the famous Blue Lagoon, - home to giant clams and coral gardens. The highest peak is Cooks Look at 359 metres.

Those in search of real escape continue to voyage from all corners of the earth to experience this rare and remarkable reef experience. They come to experience the complete freedom, the secluded beaches and countless tropical delights this exotic destination affords the discerning traveler.

Location

Today Lizard Island is far more accessible than in the past. Whilst it remains Australia's northern most island resort, it is none the less only one hours flight from Cairns, flying over a myriad wonderland of coral cays, reefs and beaches that make up the worlds largest single living organism, the Great Barrier Reef.

Lizard has its own airstrip and Royal Flying Doctor medical facilities, with 24 hour radio contact with the Flying Doctor base in Cairns. Lizard Island is accessed via regular flights from major capital Australian cities to Cairns Airport, followed by a stunning scenic flight of approximately one hour to Lizard Island. Note that in most cases luggage restrictions apply on this flight. Cairns airport has storage facilities for excess baggage.
