Curumbin Beach and Sanctuary
CURRUMBIN BEACH is a nice, relatively undeveloped stretch of coast between Elephant Rock and Currumbin Point, and with a breeze there are usually some decent rollers to ride. Just to the north, PALM BEACH is more sheltered. Vikings, in the surf club building below Elephant Rock, serves Chinese food, or you can fill up on regular pub fare at the Palm Beach Surf Club.

Currumbin Sanctuary, on Tomewin Street (daily 8am–5pm; $16), was started in 1946 by Alex Griffiths, who foresaw the decline of the coastal environment and developed the seventy-acre park as a wildlife refuge. Forest, lake and grassland fairly bustle with native fauna. There are the usual feeding times and tame kangaroos but the park’s strongest point is the beautiful natural surroundings, best experienced from the elevated walkways through the forest, where you’ll see koalas, tree kangaroos and birds at eye-level.
