Hungerford
The state border bisects Hungerford, which consists of little more than a couple of houses, a post office and a pub. Make sure you shut the steel dingo-proof fence behind you when you drive through: there’s a $1000 fine if you don’t.
The heart of the town is the corrugated-iron Royal Mail Hotel, just near the fence in Queensland: you can buy fuel, bread, milk and meat here, excellent meals are served until 9pm, and the friendly owners are happy to give advice. You can also stay in the bedrooms running along the front verandah, the caravan or bunkroom in the back, or camp. Fun is provided by dingo-tossing competitions on the highway at the front of the pub: since traffic is sparse and has to pause at the gate, it’s an ideal spot to hurl a stuffed effigy of a dingo as far as you can.
