Hotel in Sydney (City Centre) Westin Hotel |
| The Westin Sydney is a new hotel,
opened medio 1999. It incorporates the historic General Post Office
building opened in 1887 with its colonnaded walkway stretching from George
to Pitt Street and facing Martin Place. The GPO was Sydney's main post
office for more than 100 years, and is the point from which all road
distances are measured.
Westin Sydney promises to be a spectacular hotel with 49 rooms in the Heritage-listed building and 366 in the brand new 31-storey tower behind. The Heritage Rooms in the old GPO building range from 39 to 65 square metres and have ceiling from 3.5 to 4.8 metres high. Built within the imposing sandstone shell of the GPO, they overlook Martin Place which has long been the focal point of the city. It is a pedestrian mall with no traffic. A small war memorial, The Cenotaph, sits in the middle of Martin Place directly in front of The Westin Sydney. It is one of the most important memorials to Australia's war dead in the country. Fittingly, it is also at the modern heart of the city. |
|
| The search for a
development which would preserve the integrity of Martin Place and the
historic significance of the GPO took many years. The Westin Sydney's new
tower block will be scarcely visible from the street.
It includes 21 Tower Suites and 38 Executive Club rooms on floors 28 to 31. At that height many have sweeping views over the city an out to Sydney Harbour in the distance. The hotel is virtually on the border between the city's financial district and the main shopping area. Circular Quay at one end, and the Town Hall/Queen Victoria precinct at the other, are about 10 minutes walk. The major George Street bus route to Circular Quay, The Rocks and the Sydney Opera House runs right past one side of the hotel. The Westin Sydney caters for discerning business and leisure travellers alike. It is the only hotel in Sydney to provide a 24-hour business centre coupled with the latest in in-room communications technology. Its meeting facililies include teleconferencing and television outside broadcast. It will open with a signature restaurant called simply The Restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. The Restaurant will feature modern Australian cuisine and seasonal specials. The Lobby Bar has a traditional club-like atmosphere and will be a showcase of Australian wines as well as local and imported beers and spirits. The Coffee Bar offers a range of coffees and light snacks. |
