Kangaroo Explorer Cruises

Wreck & Reef Diving Cruise

Join Kangaroo Explorer, the only wreck diving and fully en-suite dive boat operating out of Cairns, for the diving experience of your life.  See the best the Great Barrier Reef has to offer and discover some of the  wrecks lying at the bottom of the ocean, just off the coast of tropical North Queensland.  Dive the Quetta, Queensland's worst single incident disaster, which sunk in Torres Strait in 1890.   A small amount of time on each trip will be dedicated to exploring the depths searching for new wrecks, using the latest digital scanning technology.

Wreck & Reef Diving Live Aboard - 8 Day 7 Nights

The SS Pandora was en route from Tahiti To England carrying mutineers from the HMS Bounty when it came to grief on August 26th, 11791, some 15km north of Raine Island, as it tried to navigate its way through the reef.  Thirty five people drownded including 4 'mutineers'.  Those that were rescued made it back to England to face court martial and a sentence of death.  Discovered in 1977, the Pandora is in 33 meters of water and is an excellent dive site as it is intact and offers and abundance of fish and marine life.

The SV Quetta a modern and sophisticated passenger cargo vessel was launched from the Scottish shipyards of Denny Bros & Co in 1881 and was intended to operate the London-Calcutta run.  However, after her first visit to Queensland in 1883 she remained on the 45 day one way 'cruise' between Australia and London.  Tragedy struck on her twelth voyage on a clear moonlight night in calm seas and with a special pilot assisting with navigation.  On the evening of Friday 28th February 1890, the ship hit an unchartered reef in the Adolphus Channel and went down in less than three minutes.  With the loss of 133 lives this became Australi'as worst peacetime maritime disaster.  The SV Quetta is in 20 meters of water and an amazing wreck to dive with an abundance of marine life now making it their home.

A more recent wreck is that of the corvette HMAS Warrnambool.  This vessel sank in September 1947 whilst clearing a post-war winefield off the coast of the Cape York Peninsula and is in 20 meters of water.

Australia's Great Barrier Reef is world renowned for its fabulous diving experiences.  With the friendly crew aboard the MV Kangaroo Explorer you can enjoy some of the best diving of this magnificient attraction.   However, Kangaroo Explorer Wreck & Reef Diving is more than just the wonders of the coral reef.  For a truly memorable experience come and join us exploring some of the 1000 or so wrecks strewn along the reef between Cairns and Cape York, the most northerly part of Australia.

You may even get the opportunity to dive as yet uncharted wrecks!  We also include (weather and currents may restrict some dives) wrecks that still have their cannons intact.  Cruise can be done in conjunction with a stay at Pajinka Lodge to top off your Cape York
