Insurances and Optional Coverages
Global insurance coverages are always subject to change. Please verify at time of rental.

Public Liability and Property Damage

Unlimited public liability and property damage (PLPD) are included in the rental charges.

  • Public liability covers injury or death for persons outside the Avis vehicle.
  • Property damage covers damage to property other than the Avis vehicle or renter's, driver's or passenger's property.
Restriction: Public liability and property damage coverage is cancelled if the Avis vehicle is driven into the Northern Territory or North of Carnarvon, Western Australia.

Loss or Damage to Avis Car
Depending on the rental rate and car group rented, the renter is responsible for an Excess amount ranging from AUD 500.00 to AUD 2,500.00 for damage to the Avis car if Excess Reduction (ER) is not purchased. Purchase of ER reduces the renter's responsibility to range of AUD 350.00 to AUD900.00. Check with the nearest Avis reservation office for details and cost.

The renter is responsible for all damages in the following situations:

  • Underbody or overhead damage from being driven on unsealed/unmade roads or surfaces.
  • The vehicle is used for towing purposes.
  • Negligence or breach of the rental agreement terms and conditions or laws of the state.
  • Car is driven into the Northern Territory or north of Carnarvon, Western Australia, when the vehicle has been rented from an Avis location outside this region.

Theft Protection
Depending on the rental rate and car group rented, the renter is responsible for an Excess amount ranging from AUD 500.00 to AUD 2,500.00 for damage to the Avis car if Excess Reduction (ER) is not purchased. Personal Accident Insurance
Personal Accident Insurance (PAI) provides accidental death or bodily injury coverage up to AUD 75,000.00 for the authorized driver of the Avis vehicle. Passengers are covered for accidental bodily injuries sustained in an accident independently of all other causes, occurring while riding or driving with the renter and while stepping in or stepping out of the Avis vehicle. Check with the nearest Avis reservation office for details and cost.

Personal Effects Protection
Personal Effects and Baggage Insurance (PEP) covers the personal belongings accompanying the renter and the immediate family members travelling with the renter for up to AUD 6,000.00. Personal belongings are insured against physical loss or damage. There has to be a sign of forced entry into the vehicle to make a claim. Check with the nearest Avis reservation office for details and cost.

Exclusion: PEP does not cover money, securities, tickets, documents, currency, jewelry, credit cards, household effects, perishables, animals. Check with the Avis rental office for details.

Surcharges and Taxes
Surcharges
Renters and additional drivers who are under 25 years of age must pay one surcharge of AUD 25.00 per day. Surcharges may be applied due to state and/or local laws or ordinances. Please check at the rental counter upon arrival or at the time of reservation for the amounts of any applicable surcharges.

 

Taxes
1.5% in Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, Northern Territory
1.8% in South Australia, Western Australia
2.0% in Tasmania
.75% in Victoria
.43% in Queensland
Additional Drivers and Charges
The minimum age for most qualified additional drivers is 25. The minimum age requirement may vary due to Avis contractual agreements. There is no additional driver charge.
Drivers License Information
Drivers License
    The renter must have held a valid driver's license for at least 12 months and must present it at the time of rental. The license is checked for validity by noting the following:
    • Provincial (state) seal or stamp
    • Expiration date
    • Description of the renter
    • Traffic violations
    • License signature
    • Erasures or corrections are not accepted unless authorized by issuing province (state).
    • Restrictions: Rental is prohibited to holders of an Australian learner's permit or a provisional driver's license which is issued for the first 12 months.
    Driver's licenses accepted by Avis in Australia:
    • A driver's license issued by any state or territory in Australia or New Zealand.
    • A driver's license issued by any United States, territory, or possession.
    • A valid driver's license issued by a country participating in the 1949 Geneva convention on Road Traffic or the 1943 Convention on the Regulation of Inter-American Automobile Traffic. (Call the nearest reservation office for participating countries.)
    • Any foreign renter must carry a driver's license written in English. Any customer carrying a non-English license must also present an International Driving Permit that is written in English.
    • International driving permits serve only as a translation, and are valid if presented in conjunction with an official driver's license of the issuing country.
    Temporary licenses:
    • A temporary license issued as a replacement for a lost license or due to a change of address is accepted and will be checked for validity.
    • A temporary license issued as a beginner's permit for the purpose of learning to drive is not accepted.

 

Special Equipment
Child Safety Seats
Child Safety Seats for infants/toddlers between 9-19 kg (not suitable for newborns) are available at most locations at AUD 5.00 per day, AUD 25.00 per week, maximum charge of AUD 50.00 per rental. Please specify need and age of child at time of reservation.
One Way Rentals Within this Country
One-way rentals are allowed between Avis cities in the eastern states, such as Queensland, New South Wales, etc. One-way rentals are allowed between most Avis cities in the eastern states and Perth, Western Australia. One-way charges may apply. Check with the nearest Avis reservation office for details and availability.

One-way restrictions are as follows:

  • There are no one-way rentals allowed into or out of Tasmania.
  • There are no one-way rentals allowed into or out of the Northern Territory or Northwest Western Australia (north of Carnarvon).
  • Vehicles rented outside the Northern Territory and Northwest Western Australia are not permitted to be driven through these regions.
