Apollo Camper & Car Hire
Frequent Asked Questions (FAQ's)

These are some frequently asked questions that our customers ask (and our answers!)

Where do we camp at night?

We recommend that you stay in a caravan (RV) park. Australia has an extensive network of caravan parks in all major tourist centres and in most towns.

They offer excellent recreation facilities and of course have superb shower and toilet amenities.  They also have provision for you to plug the vehicle into electricity. There is ordinarily no need to book ahead, even in peak periods. The approximate cost is $15 to $20 (Australian dollars) a night.

Most national parks have areas set aside for camping. There are often shower and toilets, barbeques and picnic areas and of course national parks provide a scenic and peaceful place to stay at overnight. However these areas generally do not have facility for you to plug the vehicle into electricity.

Because of local council laws you are not permitted to camp on the side of the road in the vicinity of towns. However outside the towns and in country areas it is generally allowed.

How long does the battery system last?

Appliances such as the fridge, lights and water pump etc run off a dual battery system. The battery system will last approximately 12 to 15 hours when fully charged. The batteries only recharge when you drive the vehicle. The engine battery is separate, so if you are unlucky enough to flatten one of the rear batteries you will still be able to start the engine and drive. All vehicles apart from 4wd’s have facility to plug into electricity. When you plug into electricity in a caravan park all accessories automatically run off electricity rather then the batteries. You can then use appliances such as the television, microwave and rear airconditioning etc that only run off electricity.

What is supplied with the vehicle?

Each vehicle is supplied with complimentary living equipment (such as bedding, cooking equipment, eating utensils, bath and tea towels.)  Also provided are comprehensive maps and camp ground guides.

We strongly recommend that you use soft bags instead of suitcases for your luggage. Soft bags take up less room and fit easier into the storage cupboards and lockers in the vehicle.

Why should I choose the Total Cover Protection Package?

With the CDW option you have an excess in case of an accident. This means that you can be liable for any damage to the vehicle up to the amount of the excess (even if the accident was not your fault!)  You are also liable for damage caused such as when a rock from a passing car hits your windscreen causing a chip or a crack and you are also liable if you are unlucky enough to puncture a tyre. Total Cover gives you complete peace of mind in such circumstances as you are not liable for anything unless you breach the terms and conditions of the rental contract.

Do I need a special license?

A valid current car driver’s license is to be produced for everyone intending to drive the vehicle on the tour. State, Overseas or International Licenses are acceptable. However, the license must be in English characters for our staff to read.

How do I get to the Apollo Depot?

Pick up and return of vehicles is at our depots (not airports). Our depots are close to the airports and we pay for one complimentary taxi transfer to our depot on pick up of the vehicle (from the airport or local hotel/motel only!)   On return of the vehicle it is your responsibility to make your way to your next destination.

What is the Cost of Fuel?

Petrol (Gasoline) in Australia comes in unleaded and leaded grades, and is sold by the litre. Petrol and diesel fuel costs between $0.90 AUD and $1.20 AUD per litre and can be higher especially in country and remote outback areas.
