Victoria (Melbourne Region)

Warburton
From Yarra Junction it’s not far to WARBURTON, a pretty, old-fashioned town on the Upper Yarra River, and starting point for the Upper Yarra Track, which follows old timber tram and vehicle tracks upstream for over 80km. The track can be covered as a series of short walks or as a continuous five-to seven-day trek, finishing in the Baw Baw National Park where it joins the Alpine Walking Track. For more information contact the NRE Information Centre in Melbourne (tel 03/9637 8080) or the telephone information service run by Parks Victoria (tel 13 1963).

Apart from many wineries in its vicinity, YARRA GLEN also boasts the splendidly restored Grand Hotel and, not far away on the Melba Highway, the National Trust Gulf Station (Wed–Sun & public holidays 10am–4pm; $6), a collection of ten 1850s slab farm buildings set in a large area of farmland.
