Hotel in Japan
Japan Ryokan Pass
The Japan Ryokan Pass covers 29 ryokans in 20 cities and hot spring areas throughout Japan. This system allows you to stay in the clean and comfortable lodgings of your member ryokan (Japanese inn) which are located in favorite places or areas where onsen (hot springs) are available in Japan.

A ryokan is probably a place where visitors can come closest to the traditional style of Japanese home life. Guests will sleep on a comfortable futon (mattress) laid out on the floor of a tatami (straw matted) room which functions as a living room during the day and as a bedroom at night. Bathrooms are Japanese style and often communal, though the sexes are segregated, except for a very few inns at outlying hot spring resorts. NTA Ryokan are standard class accommodations, not deluxe class.

Japan, with about 70% of its land being mountainous, is blessed with thermal hot springs or as we say in Japanese, onsen. Over 2,000 onsen resorts are found around the country, ranging from large recreational resorts to small groups of inns isolated in the mountains.
Onsen bathing is one of the great pleasures of the Japanese. Experience the traditional Japanese way of life while you are in Japan! The experience of staying in a ryokan will be an unforgettable memory of your trip. There are many kinds of baths, as follows:

1. cascade bath 2. cave bath 3. medicinal bath 4. mud bath 5. sand bath 6. steam bath 7. rotenburo (outdoor or open-air bath) 8. riverside bath 9. seaside or lakeside bath 10. outdoor riverside bath

The difference between a hotel and ryokan

  • The hotel front desk is open all day. The ryokan lobby and entrance is closed at a certain time. The ryokan check-in time is around 3 pm; check-out time around 10 am.
  • Tipping: it is not customary to tip in Japan. There is no need to tip in ryokan.

When you arrive at your ryokan

  • Take your shoes off as you walk in the entrance, and put on slippers. The slippers are used for walking inside the ryokan. For short strolls near the ryokan, you can use the ryokan sandals or geta (wooden clogs).
  • A yukata (kimono-like robe) is provided for each person. This can also be worn as a pajama. You can also leave your room wearing the yukata. Besides wearing it in the ryokan, you may use it to go for a walk outside your ryokan. During cold periods there is a tanzen (outer robe) to wear over the yukata. Always wear it over the yukata.
  • How to use the bath
Do not use soap in the bath tub. The tub water is not for one person but for everyone. Place all of your clothing in the basket, clean yourself with soap outside the tub. After washing off the soap, step into the bath tub. Relax your strained nerves and muscles.
  • Washoku (Japanese-style meals)
A visit to a ryokan always includes dinner and breakfast. You will have the opportunity to eat washoku. Please adopt the Japanese-style and use waribashi (disposable chopsticks). Price includes dinner and breakfast, however, there is no reduction for meals not taken.
