To
the east lies Yogyakarta, the old capital and cultural heart of Java with
a functioning court life and a sultan who acts as the city's governor.
Further east lies Surabaya, Indonesia's second city.Off
the eastern tip of Java lies Bali and beyond that the islands of Lombok,
Sumba, Flores and others forming a chain all the way to Indonesia's
easternmost province, Irian Jaya. To
the west of Jakarta is the huge island of Sumatra. To the north and east
lie Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi and the Maluku Islands (The Moluccas).
Many of these are just a two-hour flight from Jakarta. An
extensive network of air services connect Jakarta, Denpasar (Bali) and
Medan (North Sumatra). Other ports of entry/exit include Manado (North
Sulawesi), Ambon (Maluku), Batu Besar (Batami), Pekan Baru (Riau),
Balikpapan (East Kalimantan), Surabaya (East Java), Kupang (East Nusa
Tenggara), Pontianak (West Kalimantan) and Biak (Irian Jaya). For more general information on Indonesia, go to: For more regional information on Indonesia, go to: |
