| One of the Bali hotels most admired by
General Managers at other hotels in Bali — and, indeed, one of the most
admired hotels anywhere in Asia — is The Oberoi, located along a
beautiful and pristine stretch of beach north of Legian. Its 75 cottages
and villas nestle in 6 hectares (15 acres) of landscaped tropical gardens
and well-tended lawns. Hundreds of palms sway gently in balmy sea breezes
scented with the perfume of frangipani, hibiscus, orchids and
bougainvillea which also add an exotic riot of colour.
Frangipani and camplung trees provide shade
around The Oberoi's much-photo-graphed swimming pool and its open-air cafés
and bars. In fact, this is one holiday resort that looks even better than
the beautiful travel brochures which portray it. The overall design of the
resort emphasizes the feeling of spaciousness and privacy that guests
experience. What is more, the ratio of three staff to every guest assures
a superior level of service in every respect.
The Oberoi's Lanai cottages are built in clusters
of four around a central rock pond. Each Lanai, with four rooms and a
private balcony, measures a full 55 square metres (592 square feet).
Bathrooms are set in walled gardens and appointed with sunken marble tubs
and double vanity counters. All have in-room safes, mini-bars, satellite
television reception, designer toiletries, plush robes and slippers, IDD
telephones, hair dryers and video cassette players. (All guests have
access to a library that includes videos, books, music cassettes and
games.)
Thatched-roof Villas range in area from 200 to
600 square metres (2,160 to 6,460 square feet). Each has its own garden
courtyard with rock pond. A raised pavilion provides a shady retreat for
alfresco dining and a private balcony overlooks the gardens or the beach.
Bedrooms are individually designed with themes that reflect each villa's
floral name; and that floral theme is carried out in specially
commissioned oil paintings. The feeling of luxury is further enhanced by
the opulent marble flooring and rich teakwood furniture.
Eight of the villas have their own swimming
pools. Bathrooms in some Luxury Villas are open to the air but secluded
behind high stone walls for privacy; each has its own little garden.
Royal Villas each have two open-air garden
bathrooms, a kitchenette and a separate living room with traditional
Balinese alang-alang thatch roofing.
Gourmet dining in marvellous settings is another
hallmark of The Oberoi. Among the menu choices at the Kura Kura Restaurant
are Grilled Canadian Sea Scallops, Lobster Apicus, Chilled Asparagus Soup,
Charcoal-Grilled Tuna Steak, Mulligatawny, Roasted Breast of Duck and
Pan-Fried New Zealand Loin of Lamb. Breakfasts and light meals are served
at the Frangipani Café (where fresh seafood is prominent on the menu) and
beverages of every description at both the Kayu Bar near the beach and at
the Kul Kul pool-deck bar.
Other attractive options at this celebrated
resort include tennis and a Health Spa with sauna and massage. Tours to
nearby villages or excursions further afield can easily be arranged by The
Oberoi's experienced staff. |
